The 18 Bones of The Human Skeleton

For this challenge, we will be looking at the following 18 bones, or bone structures.

At the top is the Cranium, which is the largest part of the skull as it holds and protects the brain. Separate from this is the Mandible, which refers to the jaw bone and can move independently from the cranium. At the base of the Cranium we have the start of the Spine, which connects the upper and lower halves of the body, and is made up of 24 individual vertebrae.

At the base of the neck we have the Manubrium, which connects to both the Clavicles and the Sternum. Between them, the manubrium, sternum, and spine support the larger structure of the Rib Cage. There are 12 rib bones on each side.

Around the back we have the Scapula which provide a major landmark on either side of the clavicles. Together, the clavicle and scapula form what is known as the shoulder girdle. The scapula also connects to the head of the Humerus, which is the large bone of the upper arm.

The Ulna and Radius make up the lower arm, with the ulna being the smaller bone and is on the same side as the pinky, while the radius is larger and is on the same side of the thumb. These are a unique set of bones as they allow for Pronation and Supination - fancy words for flipping of the hand from either palm down or palm up.

At the base of the spine there is the Sacrum, which is made up of five fused vertebra, and just below this is the small section of the Coccyx, which are made up of four additional fused vertebra and is often referred to as the tail bone.

The major component of the lower half of the body is the structure of the Pelvic Bone or Pelvis which supports the entirety of the upper figure.

Nestled into the bottom corner of the pelvis, we have the Femur, which is the bone of the upper leg (notice the form). At the knee we have the Patella, or knee cap.

The last two bones are the Fibula and Tibia. The Fibula is on the outside of the leg, and on the same side as the pinky toe. The Tibia is on the inside of the leg and is on the same side as the big toe

Assignment Two

I want you to go into this assignment as blind as possible, relying only on your memory. At this point we aren't thinking about faces or things like eyes, noses, mouths... etc. I'm looking for bone, meaning eye sockets, nasal cavities, and teeth. Do your best to recall the correct placement of these features, as well as their relative proportions. This assignment is not meant to be a challenge, just do the best you can.

You can use this exercise as a guide to your own ability level. If you really struggle with this assignment you could consider yourself more of a beginner since you haven't committed it to muscle memory yet. You may want to give yourself some leeway when it comes to the difficulty level. If you did okay, then you are probably more of an intermediate artist who needs a little bit of a challenge. If this exercise was really easy for you, then you are more of an advanced artist and you should strive for excellence in everything you do during this challenge.
