LESSON SIX

Creating Patterns in Perspective

Building off of the last lesson, which was dividing a plane into an odd number of divisions, let’s look at an alternative use for this same technique. I’ve put the pattern in the top right corner so you can see what we are trying to achieve.

To do this, you are going to create a line in the foreground and mark out your pattern onto it. For this example, I’ve created a series of stripes evenly spaced across the plane. Use the special vanishing point - created by intersecting the outer end of our line, with the inner bottom corner of the plane, and extending that to the horizon line. Use this to translate the pattern onto the plane in perspective, just like you did in the previous exercise.

This pattern is obviously very basic, but maybe you can imagine just how useful this technique would be in other situations. I’ll show you a valuable example in the next assignment.
