LESSON TWELVE

Although practicing our lines, curves, and circles are important, not everything we will draw will rely solely on those simple lines. There are times when variation and texture can be instilled in other ways using various shapes and patterns. We will be getting into this more deeply in a future assignments, but for right now, you can start experimenting with simple shapes and patterns like these.

In the very early stages of your art journey, even basic exercises, like the ones you’ve found here, can offer up a bit of a challenge. But you don’t want to become overly concerned with mastering them immediately, like I’ve mentioned before, that will come with patience, practice and time. They will eventually become second nature especially if you add them to your warm up routine moving forward, and you won’t have to expend any extra energy to employ them once you’ve got them down pat.

Exercise Nine

Using the Over Laying method, practice drawing some simple shapes that will help build simple textures in future exercises. Here we are practicing triangles, squares, rectangles, twirls, and short lines. Can you imagine how you might use them in a texture or design? Good luck!
