LESSON SEVEN
Another technique for creating accuracy in your lines is to practice repeating the same mark multiple times so you can build up a muscle memory that can be consistently relied on. One way to gain confidence is knowing that you can rely on your hand to perform on instinct allowing you to work quickly, thoughtlessly, and, most importantly, accurately.
Exercise Four
Similar to previous exercises, we are going to be thinking about if we are left handed or right handed because this will dictate if you are working from left to right, or right to left; as well as from top to bottom. Remember, you want to work from your far side and towards your dominant hand and from top to bottom to help avoid smudging. You are free to turn the page in any direction as long as you stick to drawing from the far side towards your dominant side and from top to bottom.
We are going to practice three line lengths, a relatively short one, a medium length, and the last one will span the width of the page. The point of the assignment is to trace a single line ten times doing your best to keep your lines as close to the example line as possible. This means that you want to do your very best at reaching the center of the two dots on each side. The goal is for your lines to disappear into one another so that your accuracy is such that you can’t even tell that the line was traced multiple times.
Keep in mind that we are not looking for perfection right now, we just want to work towards it as we practice over time.
